The Archaeological Area of Ancient Abellinum is a place of historical interest, located close to the town of Atripalda.
Located on the left bank of the Sabato river, the site houses artifacts dating back to the end of the 2nd century BC. and identifiable with the Roman city of Abellinum: a colony built, in turn, on the remains of a previous Samnite settlement, which took place precisely in that territory between the 4th and 3rd centuries BC. and known as Oppidum Abellinatum. An external part is visible in the Archaeological Area, which includes both three rows of the fortification from the Samnite age, built in opus quadratum (square work), and the wall circuit, built in opus reticulatum (reticulated work) in the Roman age. In the internal part, on the other hand, the baths, a domus in the Hellenistic-Pompeian style and the forum are particularly noticeable. From the latter, a circular area of marble was extracted (which seems to have been dedicated to Tiberius), now exhibited in the Irpino Museum in Avellino.
Various furnishings and suggestive decorations of the ancient rooms were also found in the Archaeological Area of Ancient Abellinum, all elements that allow us to affirm that the monumental complex, which extends for 2,500 m², was a patrician residence. Furthermore, thanks to the archaeological excavations carried out in the area, the sectors of ancient necropolises have also been identified and some burials have been found along the perimeter walls of the Church of Sant'Ippolisto.
Still living and tangible testimony of the influence of Roman civilization in Irpinia, the finds of the ancient Abellinum constitute one of the main historical-archaeological sites of the entire province. read less
