Casalbore, whose name derives from Casali Albuli, with reference to the local white stone used in construction, is located on the border with the province of Benevento, along the route of the Regio Tratturo Pescasseroli-Candela. The area has been inhabited since ancient times, as evidenced by the precious archaeological finds of the Tempio Italico (5th-6th century BC), the only temple building from the Samnite era known in Irpinia, and the remains of the Samnite necropolis located in Località Spineto. The historic center is characterized by the presence of the Castle with an adjoining Norman Tower, an outpost for the defense of the Miscano Valley, and by several stately buildings, embellished with stone portals and Gothic-inspired windows. Among the religious buildings, the Monastery of Santa Maria della Misericordia stands out, custodian of a precious eighteenth-century canvas depicting the Madonna della Misericordia between Saint Dominic and other Saints, and the Church of Santa Maria dei Bossi, from the early Middle Ages, built using the walls of a funerary monument dating back to the 2nd century AD. Casalbore is also known as "the town of fifty springs", due to the wealth of water sources present in its green territory. The Casalbore Castle, together with the annexed Norman Tower, constitutes an architectural complex of historical interest located in Piazza XI Febbraio. The fortress is based on a Gothic-style defensive structure that, over the centuries, has suffered various damages caused by earthquakes and other events caused by man. Made with local gray stone and with five entrance doors, the Castle surrounds the Norman Tower, whose construction dates back to the 12th century. Even though, over time, it has undergone several transformations, the architectural complex is, even today, a significant testimony to the construction techniques of the Normans, who are responsible for the birth of the community and the town.
The Tower, located at the highest point of the town, obviously represented a strategic observation point over the Miscano Valley and, therefore, of fundamental importance for defense. Its structure develops around a large parade ground, which is accessed through a door, called "Porta Beneventana", obtained in the lowest part of the Tower itself, probably in periods following the original construction. A historical symbol of the Casalbore community, the castle area of Casalbore hosts an exhibition space, the Museum of Castles, created thanks to the collaboration between the Cultural Association Terre di Campania and the municipal administration.
One of the stately buildings in the ancient village of Casalbore is Palazzo Maraviglia dating back to the 17th century; the building was characterized by a notable extension and attracts the eye, given the gracefulness of the structure and the peculiarity of the arch that rests on it.
