In the hamlet of Castello di Forino (AV) there is a fascinating but little-known and almost abandoned medieval village that still hosts the sanctuary of San Nicola and what remains of the feudal castle. The origins of this village date back to Roman times, thanks to the remains of the "Fontis Augustei Acquaeductus", an aqueduct built by the emperor Claudius to bring water from the springs of Serino to the Forino valley. For this reason Forino has always been a strategic point, in fact over time it was invaded by the Visigoths, the Ostrogoths and the Byzantines, who built the fortress, the village that surrounds it and the church of San Nicola. Later it was the turn of the Lombards first and then the Normans, to then pass into the hands of the Orsini, the Cecere and finally the Caracciolo. A fascinating legend about the eruption of Vesuvius in 1631 tells that in those days a sky blackened by the rain of ash gave way to the sun when the procession of Saint Nicholas arrived at his church. From that day on, every March 14th, the saint is carried in procession from the church of Santo Stefano, located in the center of the town, to the church of Saint Nicholas in the ancient village.
