Cavaniglia Castle, located on the top of the hill 670 meters above sea level, in a dominant position in the Alta Valle del Calore, was most likely built between the 7th and 9th centuries. It presents itself as an imposing and robust quadrangular structure, of Norman design, founded on the limestone rock of the hill. The Castle was the home of several noble families including the d'Aquino, the Giamvilla, the Sforza and the Mayorga-Strozzi. The Cavaniglia left the greatest mark on the Castle, as its name itself testifies. They transformed it into a noble residence and equipped it with an imposing square tower, with an advanced body on the north-west side, which represents the best preserved part of the structure. The complex was on three levels, now two, within which there were 24 rooms. After the second half of the 19th century the Castle was abandoned. Today it is home to the Municipal Art Gallery "Michele Lenzi", which houses works by the painter from Bagnoli to whom it is dedicated, as well as other artistic representations. Spectacular is the view that can be enjoyed from the terrace/roof of the castle. read less
