The Marchesale Castle of Auletta, owned by the Maioli Castriota Scanderbech family, has medieval origins when the village, located in the highest part of the historic center of the city, became part of the fortified defensive system of the Duchy of Salerno. Over the centuries, the structure of the Castle was subject to some modifications and took on its current architectural layout after 1240 following the inspection carried out by the Duke of Calabria, accompanied by the Florentine Antonio Marchesi, an expert in fortifications. Thanks to its fortified structure, as well as its strategic position, in 1535 the Castle put up a valid resistance to the assaults of the Spanish troops of Emperor Charles V. In the following centuries, the Castle, after belonging to the Gesualdo family, belonged to the Marquises Vitilio De Gennaro, and then to the Castriota Scanderbech family (descendants of Giorgio Castriota Scanderbech, an Albanian national hero of the 15th century). During the first half of the twentieth century, the Castle also welcomed as guests the last King of Italy, Umberto II of Savoy, and his wife Maria Josè. read less
