The Marchionale Castle, also called "Palazzo Marchionale", is a place of interest located in Taurasi, in the historic center of the Irpinian village.
Its construction probably dates back to the 7th century AD, in the period marked by the Lombard domination. Destroyed by the Saracens between 900 and 910, it was enlarged by the Normans in the 12th century, with the addition of a keep. Over time, however, the Castle of Taurasi has undergone various transformations and has seen the succession of various owners, including the De Taurasi, the Gesualdo, the Caracciolo, the Pignatelli and the Carafa.
Today, this historic building is owned by the Municipality and, after some restoration works, it has been used, since 2006, as the headquarters of the Regional Enoteca for the Wines of Irpinia, located on the second floor of the structure. On the lower floor, however, the stables are located, where the "Tau Sensory Path" has been set up, which guides the visitor to discover the Taurasi DOCG, Fiano di Avellino DOCG and Greco di Tufo DOCG wines. Among the spaces to be admired in the Marchionale Castle, there are also various rooms of characters linked to the history of the town, among which the so-called "Prince's Room" stands out, i.e. the "Gabriele D'Isola" room where, in 1566, Carlo was born Gesualdo, one of the best known Italian composers. Finally, another space of notable beauty is the Chapel of San Pietro a Castello, where it is possible to admire a marble altar and the vault finely stuccoed with angels.
Visiting this monumental building in Taurasi is an authentic journey into the culture of the village, from the more historical and artistic one to that which concerns, instead, the precious red wine of Irpinia. read less
