The Church of the Holy Apostles Philip and James is a place of worship located in Baiano (AV), on the street of the same name, in the historic center of the Irpinia town. Probably built in the seventeenth century, it was built on a rectangular base, and is flanked, on the right, by a bell tower on a square base. On the outside, the attention is captured by the Campanian Baroque façade, in shaded yellow and white, and a characteristic entrance door, covered in metal plates from 1794; inside, however, it houses marble and wooden sculptures, such as the wooden statue of Saint Philomena from the nineteenth century and an engraved marble plaque, an isolated work, from 1912. The single nave, with a presbytery, has three side chapels on each side; above it is a wooden pulpit, depicting, in the center, a Risen Christ, crowned by a vortex of announcing putti and the incredulous apostles observing the event. The main altar features an altarpiece, whose pictorial composition illustrates the “Virgin with Child Jesus between the Holy Apostles, Philip and James and the souls in purgatory”, a canvas painting dating back to between the 18th and 19th centuries. A sacred symbol of the ancient center of Baiano, the Church of the Holy Apostles Philip and James contributes to enriching the artistic heritage of the Irpinia town. read less
