The Church of Saints Modestino, Fiorentino and Flaviano, also known as the "Church of San Modestino", is a place of worship located in Mercogliano.
The religious building is located outside the perimeter of the old city walls, at the end of the beautiful Viale San Modestino, characteristic for the double row of imposing plane trees. The religious structure is the site of sacred celebrations in honor of Modestino Vescovo, one of the three Patron Saints of Mercogliano, whose worship is shared with the community of Avellino faithful.
The distinctive feature of the building is undoubtedly the overpass bell tower, which also allows the transit of cars and which flanks, on the right side, a simple and linear façade. Inside, the ceiling decorated with stucco and marble appears enchanting, in which, among others, the painting by the Afragolese painter Angelo Mozzillo stands out, depicting episodes of the devastating fire of 1656 which destroyed part of the ancient village. Four side chapels, paintings, statues of saints and marble altars enrich the sacral equipment of the Church. Distinctive is the "holy well", four meters deep, which is located at the entrance to the second chapel, in correspondence with the place where the remains of the three martyr saints to whom the church is dedicated were allegedly found. An ancient wooden confessional, very well preserved, flanks the well.
Even today, the Mercogliano community is deeply linked to this place of worship that rises in the heart of the city. read less
