The Church of Saints Peter and Paul of Mercogliano is located in the medieval village of Capocastello.
Among the most important places of worship in the city of Irpinia, it was built in the 13th century within the old walls that surrounded the historic center of the village, on a site where a temple dedicated to Castor and Pollux once stood: the pagan cult therefore came , replaced with the Christian one, which has come down to the present day. Various vicissitudes related to natural events, such as earthquakes and fires, combined with subsequent renovations, have changed its structure and original appearance.
Today, the Church externally has a high bell tower which previously served as a watchtower, with Gothic mullioned windows and an octagonal cell, equipped with accommodation for the ancient bells. The internal religious environment houses a fresco representing a "Madonna with Child", found behind one of the niches that housed the statue of Saint Lucia, and a high altar, where it is possible to admire a case containing the sacred relics, kept here for centuries and belonging to the three Patron Saints of the city, whose bodies were found in the religious building dedicated to them, the Church of Saints Modestino, Fiorentino and Flaviano.
Finally, the strong faith and generosity of the Mercoglianese faithful allowed the restoration of part of the picture gallery, thanks to which precious paintings were recovered which contribute to enriching the artistic and sacred heritage of the Church. read less
