The Church of San Bernardino is a place of worship located in Mirabella Eclano, on the street of the same name in the historic center of the Irpinia town.
The religious building reflects the cult of San Bernardino of Siena, deeply rooted in the Eclanese community, whose widest diffusion dates back to the second half of the sixteenth century. However, the Church in his honor was built in 1698, while the internal decorations were made starting from 1740. Over the years, the structure has undergone numerous transformations, also following the frequent earthquakes, including those of 1962 and 1980 which damaged the original plant.
Today the Church stands out for its structure with a single nave with a chapel, two side altars and a main one. Inside, the presence of a low and entirely historiated wooden ceiling stands out, on which the twelve virtues painted in tempera by Leonardo Pallante are depicted, while in the center there is a painting, by an unknown author, which represents the ascent into heaven of San Bernardine.
The walls of the Church were frescoed by the artist Liborio Pizzella in 1769, with the story of the life of the Saint in ten episodes framed in painted frames. On the side walls, moreover, two tondos are inserted which reproduce biblical scenes. The surrounding space is occupied by carved wooden stalls, while the floor, dated 1787, is in majolica.
Attached to the Church is the Oratory, with a painted wooden ceiling and frescoed walls, on which the Passion of Christ is narrated.
Emblem of the profound faith in the Sienese saint, the Church of San Bernardino is a shining example of religious art that contributes to further enriching the high cultural depth of the Eclanese community. read less
