The Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Cielo is a place of worship located in Frigento, in the historic center of the Irpinia town.
Awarded the title of "Cathedral" in the period in which Frigento was a bishopric, the Church could have early Christian origins. The building today has a structure consisting of three naves, with a semicircular apse and side chapels: the upper structure of the Church, in particular, is the result of the refurbishment made necessary by the disastrous earthquake of 1732 which almost completely destroyed the former Cathedral.
Of great artistic value in the Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Frigento are two large canvases: one on the ceiling of the central nave, depicting the Assumption of the Virgin; the other on the transept, depicting San Marciano, first Bishop of Frigento and patron saint of the local community. Furthermore, the skull of San Marciano is also kept in it, shown for adoration by the faithful only twice a year.
Finally, the building is characterized by the numerous stratifications that attest to the historical evolution of its style, originally close to that of a Romanesque basilica.
A place of notable historical-religious importance, the former Cathedral of Frigento still retains the strong and deep-rooted cult of the Patron Saint and his relevant artistic testimonies. read less
