The Church of Santa Maria and Sant'Alessio is a place of worship located in Campanarello, a hamlet in the municipality of Venticano.
The religious building was built between the end of the 17th and the beginning of the 18th century, by local workers, in the place where the original Benedictine monastery of Santa Maria once stood, built there by the Virginian abbot Guglielmo IV. After the devastating earthquake of 23 November 1980, the place of worship required major renovation works and, in particular, interventions were made on the roof of the building and on the facade, flanked by an imposing bell tower.
The church, today, has its bearing masonry of stones, plastered and painted lightly on the façade. The interior has a rectangular plan and a single nave, at the end of which the apse opens. The walls of the sacred environments are also painted light. The sacred furniture boasts several statues recovered after the earthquake and the precious canvas dating back to the seventeenth century, depicting the "Madonna with Child".
Religious symbol of the Venticano community, the Church of Santa Maria and Sant'Alessio inherits the great importance once held by the Benedictine monastery. read less
