The Mother Church of Santo Stefano del Sole (AV), also known as the "Church of Santo Stefano", is located in Piazza del Sole, near the Church of the Immaculate Conception. The construction of this church began in the seventeenth century and ended in 1605, but it was expanded in 1716, with embellishments that also included the preparation of a square outside the entrance, the current Piazza del Sole. The bell tower, with a hexagonal base, built to the left of the Church of Santo Stefano, and the dome, whose work began in 1760, were also built later. Today, this religious building has a simple structure, with a large staircase in white Irpinian stone. Inside the Mother Church, you can admire various elements, such as a fresco on the ceiling representing the martyrdom of Saint Stephen, other paintings of the Neapolitan school that are found on the sides of the nave and on the altars, a statue of Saint Stephen on the right altar and a statue of Saint Vitus on the left altar, coming, according to tradition, from Sorbo Serpico. Finally, you cannot fail to notice the three centuries-old lime trees that are found in the square and welcome the faithful and visitors to this Church. read less
