This mighty water complex, built in opus incertum and dating back to the Republican age, is located at the highest point of the municipality of Frigenti, 911 meters above sea level. According to some sources, in the past there must have been eleven rooms, while, currently, there are only four, of which three can be visited and which can be accessed thanks to a non-original entrance.
Each gallery inside the work had the function of collecting rainwater, melted snow and the water sources of a spring adjacent to the cisterns. The collected water was purified and distributed not only to the Frigentine community, but also to a large part of the inhabitants of the neighboring territories. In recent times, moreover, a distribution duct was discovered between Via San Giovanni, where the entrance to the cisterns is located, and Via San Pietro, where there is a thermal plant that probably dates back to the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. Finally, as evidence of the importance of this impressive architectural work, there is the inscription kept in the former Cathedral of Frigento, in which the architect Antistius is mentioned as the creator of the structure.
Symbol of high ingenuity and marked planning, the Cisterns of Frigento represent an important sign of the influence of the Roman era on the local community. read less
