Cathedral of great architectural and historical importance, located in the heart of the historical centre, dedicated to the Madonna Assunta in Cielo and to the Saints Modestino, Fiorentino and Flaviano; its crypt, in Romanesque style, is particularly suggestive.

In particular, the stone blocks at the base of the bell tower are all that remains of the original Longobard/Norman construction. The facade dates back to the 19th century, the interior has three naves and preserves works of art such as frescoes, paintings and sacred furnishings; the ancient crypt where the bodies of some bishops of Avellino are buried is also important. Particular is the chapel of San Modestino, patron saint of Avellino, which contains various reliquaries including those of Saints Modestino, Fiorentino and Flaviano. The silver statue of San Modestino is placed in a niche in the chapel. Also relevant is the chapel that contains the simulacrum of the Madonna Assunta (co-patron saint of the city of Avellino), a wooden work sculpted by the artist Nicolò Fumo way back in 1718; the statue is carried in procession through the city streets on 15 August. read less
