The Hermitage of Jesus and Mary is a place of worship located in Baiano (AV), at the highest point of the municipal territory. Immersed in the silence of centuries-old olive groves, the religious building was intended, from the beginning, for hermitage, a use also evident from the architecture: both the chapel and the bell tower are connected to the living areas and the vegetable garden, the only source of subsidy, in addition to alms. The chapel, with an almost rectangular shape, retains much of the original structure and a simple geometric decoration on the walls, made with frames and pilaster strips. Inside, there is a semi-elliptical brick altar and the two ancient brick side altars are visible, completed by niches. Some wall writings testify to the custom of burying the priests of the Congrega di Carità on site. Today, the complex is home to the hermit Sister Maria Costanza Crisafulli, a presence that has given new life and spirit to a place where one can go for Eucharistic adoration and personal spiritual encounters. A spiritual and religious heritage of great value, the Hermitage of Jesus and Mary is a symbol of spirituality and faith for the entire Baianese community. read less
