History
The cave probably existed since 841, mentioned for the first time in the Chronicon Cavense. Once the property of the Episcopio di Montoro, in 1067, with the Bull of Pope Alexander II, it was assigned to the Archiepiscopal Mensa Salernitana. The cave is a tribute that the Lombards wanted to pay to their patron Saint Michael the Archangel. The faithful of Montorese go there on pilgrimage every year on Easter Monday.
