Antiquarium museum of considerable interest, with its finds testifies to the presence of man in the Ufita Valley since the Ancient-Middle Neolithic, i.e. from the 5th millennium BC. until Roman times
The "Filippo Buonopane" Antiquarium Museum in Grottaminarda is housed in the rooms of the Aquino Castle.
The Museum contains materials of different ages and origins, evidence of the presence of man in the area since the Neolithic period, collected thanks to an intense research activity conducted in the Ufita Valley.
The exhibition in the Antiquarium Museum is divided into two areas: an archaeological section and a section dedicated to contemporary history.
The prehistoric and protohistoric age is represented by fragments of flint, worked obsidian points, impasto pottery, etc. Among other objects, you can admire ceramic vases, two fragmentary axes from the Copper Age, artifacts from the Bronze and Iron Ages, loom weights and an unguentarium from the Samnite era.
The composition of the nucleus of materials from the Roman age of the Antiquarium is determined, in particular, by the proximity to the ancient Roman colony of Aeclanum. Among the ceramic and marble fragments, a male portrait, probably depicting Octavian Augustus, has stylistic features dating back to the imperial age: a round-shaped face, with large eyes, a closed mouth and locks caressing the forehead, found in the garden of Castle D 'Aquinas. In the same garden, in 1974, another head was found, a portrait of the son of Tiberius Claudius Nero, currently kept in the Irpino Museum in Avellino.
The exhibition spaces dedicated to contemporary history instead preserve photographs, documents, postcards dating from between 1900 and 1925, posters and many other objects that bear witness to the more recent life of the Grotto community.
Also known as the Municipal Antiquarium Museum of Grottaminarda, this exhibition space narrates the life of the men who inhabited this area, with a journey that from an ancient past leads up to more recent times, with permanent exhibitions that enrich a historical heritage with a unique charm.
There are three permanent exhibitions:
– the “Collection of postcards” (1905-1925);
– the “Photographic exhibition on emigration in the second half of the twentieth century”;
– the “Exhibition of the history of the coat of arms of the Municipality”. read less
