The Archaeological Museum of Taurasi is located in Via del Convento, inside the municipal seat, adjacent to the Church of the Most Holy Rosary.
The exhibition collects archaeological finds that were found during various excavation works, centered in the locality of San Martino and carried out by the then Archaeological Superintendency of Salerno, Avellino and Benevento between 1993 and 1996. The discovery of these testimonies has assumed a great historical importance, as they certify the presence of a community dating back to the Eneolithic age, between 5000 and 3000 BC, and provide extensive documentation that has been added to other relevant discoveries, previously made in the localities of Fontanalardo and Macchia of the Goths.
Inside the Archaeological Museum of Taurasi, it is possible to contemplate ceramic objects and vases with the function of cinerary urns, found inside huts: they testify to the custom of the Eneolithic populations of guarding the dead inside or near their homes. The exhibition itinerary of this Museum, however, represents a unique experience also for the precise order - not only chronological, but also typographic - in which the finds are arranged, as well as for the fact that each display case contains how many finds were found in each Hut. Furthermore, a greater immersion in that era is favored by the didactic panels which illustrate a reconstruction of the individual houses, with typographic plans which also indicate their location in the excavation area.
All these details, combined with the preciousness of the objects kept within the exhibition, contribute to making the Archaeological Museum of Taurasi a flagship of the archeology exhibitions in Irpinia. read less
