The Cart Museum is located in Mirabella Eclano, within the monumental complex of San Francesco.
Founded in 1222, it is also home to the Town Hall and the Museum of papier-mâché Mysteries, the complex consists of the buildings of the Church of the Convent, the former Oratory and the open spaces of the square with the obelisk, the cloister and the garden.
The portal of the Church dates back to the eighteenth century, as well as the wooden sculptures and the pipe organ inside. The plant has a single nave with a vaulted roof, while, on the side arms, there are niches that contain altars and statues of saints. From the 19th century onwards, the Franciscan convent changed its intended use, becoming both a municipal house and a museum complex.
Open to the public since 2005, the Museo del Carro is housed on the first floor of the monumental complex of San Francesco. Inside are exhibited some original parts of the seven registers that make up the Carro di Mirabella Eclano, a fascinating 25-metre-high work, entirely covered with woven straw panels, the result of the work of skilled craftsmen who, for more than a century, have take care of the “jewel of straw”.
Furthermore, in the Museum there is a permanent exhibition of photographs that illustrate the history of the wagon from its first project, dated 1869, covering the salient phases of its construction, up to the most significant moment of the "pull".
A place of very significant cultural importance for the Mirabella community, the Museo del Carro retraces the historical evolution of a work that is part of the wider and more varied tradition of straw carts and lilies. read less
