The headquarters of the Irpino Museum of Palazzo della Cultura, located in Corso Europa in Avellino, hosts a series of sections, containing finds and exhibitions dating back to the period from prehistory to Roman times.
Born in the thirties of the twentieth century, following the donation of the lawyer Giuseppe Zigarelli in 1889, and located within the current location since 1966, the Irpino Museum has extended its collections over the course of more than eighty years, through the acquisition of further elements deriving from private donations and excavations conducted in various areas of the territory, becoming the main historical-archaeological museum center of the Province of Avellino.
The repertoire present inside the Palazzo della Cultura is divided into several sections, most of which are located on the ground floor of the structure. The archaeological section occupies a total area of about 2,000 square meters and is divided into various historical phases: prehistory, protohistory, Samnite age and Roman age. The ground floor is also characterized by the presence of a large courtyard, located in the center and surrounded by the various sections, accompanied in turn by a teaching area and two offices. Upstairs, it is possible to admire the crib collection, the prestigious Provincial Library "Scipione and Giulio Capone", the Periodical Library, the Network Center and the Media Library.
The pride of the various archaeological remains found throughout the province, the Irpino Museum in the Palazzo della Cultura attracts many visitors every year, eager to discover the origins, customs and traditions of an extremely ancient civilization. read less
