Lake Conza corresponds to the WWF Oasis that covers a surface area of about 800 hectares and is a fascinating place, where nature triumphs and hosts a variety of different species. It is an artificial basin, which can reach 30 meters in depth, created through the construction, begun in 1972, of the dam of the same name that allows the waters of the Ofanto to be blocked. The reservoir, intended for irrigation, is drinkable and, currently, is the responsibility of the Apulian Aqueduct company. The area, a WWF Oasis since 1999, is of national and international importance for the variety of birdlife that nests or settles inside it during the long migrations between the African continent and Europe. By virtue of this importance, the area has been recognized as a Wildlife Protection Oasis by the Province of Avellino and by the European Union as a Special Conservation Area (SAC), as well as a Special Protection Area (SPA), since it hosts animal species and natural habitats at risk of extinction. Today, the Oasis is flat and, due to this peculiarity, it is accessible to anyone. Inside it, it is possible to follow two paths: the Nature Trail and the White Stork Trail. read less
