Roscigno Vecchia is one of the most fascinating villages in Cilento. Known by all as the ghost town because it is no longer habitable. The abandonment of the village was sanctioned by two ordinances of the Civil Engineers at the beginning of the last century, precisely in 1907 and 1908. The Civil Engineers were pushed to evacuate the town by the continuous landslides that affected and still affect the area today. Despite this, many inhabitants lived in Roscigno Vecchia until the 1960s, while others emigrated to Switzerland and the Americas, or moved a little further on, where we now find the current town of Roscigno. Giuseppe Spagnuolo, the guardian of Roscigno Vecchia, remained in the village until his death in 2024. The old village of Roscigno is a true Museum Town within which there is also one of the first Museums of Rural Civilization. Arriving in the main square of Roscigno Vecchia we immediately find a fairy-tale scenario. The drinking fountain in the center of the square, the ancient houses that surround the town and the 18th century church of San Nicola di Bari. Walking along the internal streets of the town you can also see the interiors of some of the more run-down houses. Steps that climb to the upper floors and stone streets. Walking through the streets of the town is a spectacle. In the main square of Roscigno Vecchia there is the trunk of a centuries-old tree that remembers Angelo Vassallo, the fisherman mayor of Pollica. read less
