The Church of Santa Veneranda, also known as the Chapel of Santa Venere or, according to others, the Church of Santa Sofia probably dates back to the 11th century, with a single nave and a semicircular apse, it represents one of the first examples, in the area, of a religious building in Greek-Byzantine style. It is located outside the city walls, above a rocky spur, and is visible from the valley and from the viewpoints of Portuccia and Marvicino. Its construction was almost certainly due to the presence of Basilian monks who, having abandoned the caves and cavities in which they had initially taken refuge to escape the Saracens, created, with the help of the local community, their first places of worship. read less
