It is very likely that the fortress, already pre-existing, was built and expanded, between the 8th and 9th centuries AD, by the Lombards and the Normans, who succeeded each other in the domination of the fiefdom. Built on the highest part of the town, overlooking Monte Croce on the surrounding Sele Valley, the Castle was typically medieval and therefore equipped with external walls, a keep and a residential building. The consecutive seismic events that struck the area have significantly compromised the structure of the stronghold of which, today, only the ruins of the perimeter walls and the cylindrical tower remain, around which, as confirmed by the findings, the original nucleus of the town was established. Numerous noble families took turns in owning the Castle, which, by order of the Aragonese, lost its defensive function and acquired that of a noble residence. Although, at present, only a few of its details are visible, the old manor continues to dominate the Sele Valley from the highest point of Senerchia, rising as a historical symbol of the local community. read less
