The origin of the sanctuary of Maria Santissima del Carpinello is linked to the rise of the ancient feudal hamlet of Visciano or Bisciano. Where the sanctuary currently stands, there was originally a small chapel, which served as a parish and an abbey. From the first report of the pastoral visit, held by the bishop of Nola, Monsignor Antonio Scarampi, from Bergamo, on 15 April 1552, the chapel is presented to us with the title of parish dedicated to Maria Santissima Assunta in cielo.

Assumed into heaven, the abbot Don Nicolò De Angelis first repaired the abbey, then wanting to prevent any disaster in the future, he decided in 1739 to build the abbey in a safer place in the center of the town where a small chapel dedicated to San Nicola once stood. It thus acquired the title of Sanctuary, and initially dedicated to Maria SS. Assumed into Heaven, it became a famous sanctuary dedicated exclusively to Maria SS. del Carpinello. On December 11, 1986, by decree, the Sanctuary was elevated to the dignity of Basilica. read less
