The "Carlo Gesualdo" municipal theater is located in Avellino, in Piazza Castello, and is named after the great madrigalist (1560-1613) who was prince of Venosa, count of Conza and lord of Gesualdo.
The idea of a theater in the capital of Irpinia was born after the earthquake of 23 November 1980, thanks to the possibility of being able to allocate part of the reconstruction funds to the development of the city. The building, designed by architects Carlo Aymonino and Gianmichele Aurigemma, was begun in 1992 and finished nine years later, in 2001.
At its inauguration, the following year, the opera by Mozart, "The Marriage of Figaro" was staged, in which the then President of the Republic, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi also took part. During the various theatrical seasons, the stage of the Carlo Gesualdo Theater has been trodden by famous actors (Gigi Proietti, Massimo Ranieri, Vincenzo Salemme, Monica Guerritore, Christian De Sica, Alessandro Siani, Michele Placido, Stefano Accorsi and many others), known singers (among others: Fiorella Mannoia, Luca Carboni, Francesco Renga), and nationally and internationally renowned theater and dance companies. The theater of the capital of Irpinia also hosted the "three days" of the famous television program Italia's Got Talent.
A futuristic structure, the Carlo Gesualdo Theater can seat 1,200 spectators and has one of the most modern and equipped stages in Europe. It has also been recognized as one of the best theaters in Italy for acoustics, among the recently built buildings. Functionality and modernity are the main qualities of a theater that has large waiting areas and a hall of sober elegance. Today the management of the structure is entrusted to the Teatro Pubblico Campano, an organization which, in the past, also managed the organization and definition of the program of the theater seasons.
Symbol of a modernity that has taken root in the heart of the historic centre, the Carlo Gesualdo Theater in Avellino has been proposing a cultural offer of great depth for several years. read less
