Roman castrum, a Longobard possession subjected to the Duchy of Benevento and then a fief of the Barony of Avella, Baiano is a town rich in history and centuries-old traditions. The most important of which is that of Maio which from 13 December, the day of Saint Lucia, and until Christmas Eve, involves the Baianese community in the development of the so-called "Mess'e notte", nocturnal celebrations of pagan origins that develop from 5 in the morning until dawn and culminating in the day of Santo Stefano Protomartire, when the largest tree, the Maio in honor of Spring, is offered as a propitiatory sacrifice and a sign of thanks from the community to the Saint.
Among secular olive trees that embellish lush hills, in the highest part of the territory of Baiano, stands the Hermitage of Jesus and Mary, a place of hermitage first, of pilgrimage, then, which was also sung by Virgil in the Georgics. A long conservative restoration, begun in the mid-eighteenth century with Sant'Alfonso de Liguori and completed only in 2002, today shows it to us in all its original splendor declined through the rectangular chapel, the semi-elliptical masonry altar and the two ancient masonry altars. read less
