The Mysteries of Frigento consist of an artistic exhibition, of a religious nature, which is held every year in the town of Irpinia, during the Lenten period.
This is an exhibition that has very distant origins: its historical location comes, in fact, from a letter, dated 21 November 1855, sent by the then Bishop of Avellino, Mons. Francesco Gallo, to the Archpriest of Frigento, the primicerio Nardovino , found inside one of the statues and recovered by the craftsmen engaged in the restoration work.
The exhibition intends to re-propose, with almost life-size figures made of papier-mâché, the scenes of the Passion and death of Jesus, exhibited in the Ex Cathedral of Frigento. Each papier-mâché statue is able to strike the viewer's gaze for some detail, such as the expressiveness of the faces, to underline the drama of the scenes represented, and, above all, the use of the fabric that alternates with the material of the figures, in the outline a sometimes opulent clothing of the characters represented. From the Last Supper to the Deposition, the Mysteries manage to arouse pure and very high emotional sensations in the hearts of the faithful.
Solemn and famous tradition, the Mysteries of Frigento testify to the strong religious devotion consolidated in the local community over the course of the various eras. read less
