The Tirata dei Carri Covoni is a religious and folkloristic event scheduled every year in Frigento, on the occasion of August 15th.
Linked to the wider and more varied tradition of straw wagons and lilies, very widespread in the Ufita Valley, the Tirata dei Carri Covoni has resumed a custom known among the peasant class of the Frigentina community. Once the wheat was harvested, it was customary to set aside a symbolic share to offer it as a gift to San Rocco, patron of Frigento, as a thank you for the good harvest obtained. The wheat to be offered to the saint was woven and carefully positioned as an ornament for some wooden carts pulled by oxen.
This tradition is renewed today on the occasion of the feast of Santa Maria Assunta in Cielo. On 15 August, the day of the Assumption, the parade of the Wagons of the Sheaves intertwined and pulled by oxen takes place, together with the statue of the Madonna, along a route that starts from the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Buon Consiglio and reaches the space in front the Church of Purgatory, where the floats are parked to be admired by the faithful and visitors.
Symbol of the peasant tradition of Frigento, the Tirata dei Carri Covoni returns to the local community an ancient and never dormant ritual. read less
