Origin of name: The etymology of the name would seem to come from the first feudal lord, Raone Del Tufo, or more simply from the volcanic rock of the tuff, abundantly present in the subsoil of the whole area of the town. The inhabitants are called Tufesi and San Michele Arcangelo is their patron.

Physical geography: Climate Warm and temperate climate. In winter, there is a lot of rainfall in Tufo compared to summer. The average annual temperature in Tufo is 13.4 ° C. The rainfall here averages 1111 mm. Territory Downstream of the town of Tufo flows the Sabato river, a left tributary of the Calore, also fed by the numerous streams and waterways present in the tuff area.

History

The first settlements in the current territory of Tufo date back to antiquity: the most direct evidence is, in fact, the discovery of a Samnite-Roman aqueduct tunnel, during the works for the construction of the bridge that, today, connects the village Irpino in Prata di Principato Ultra. Its history is closely linked to that of the nearby Torrioni: in 888, in fact, the prince of Benevento Aione II decided to build, in the current Torrione area, a turreted fortress to defend the Tufa castle. Initially, it was owned by the Del Tufo family, which took its name, in fact, from the fiefdom it administered for a few centuries. Subsequently, it was controlled by other feudal lords, including the Piatti di Monteleone princes. In the summer of 1861, the anti-sabaud revolt, from Montefalcione, extended to Tufo and the neighboring borders, leading to the indictment of 31 tuffians, most of whom suffered a prison sentence. The presence of a stretch of Samnite-Roman aqueduct tells us of a territory that has been inhabited since the Bronze Age. The village of Tufo, however, had its most important development in the Middle Ages, when the settlements around the Castle area grew, erected in the Lombard age on the summit of a volcanic rock and then further fortified during the Norman domination, in a position extremely strategic from which it was possible to keep the underlying territory under control from Mount Terminio to Sannio. Sulfur, both from an organoleptic, economic and orographic point of view, have marked the fate and destiny of the village of Tufo which in 1886 was discovered as one of the richest mineral deposits in Campania. The sulfur mine was discovered by Francesco Di Marzo and from that moment and for over 90 years, the processing of sulfur characterized the Tufa economy until the sector went into crisis in the 60s of the last century.
